DJ Paul Oakenfold Joins Tinnitus Campaign Urging Music Lovers to put Hearing First

The DJ Paul Oakenfold has emerged as the unlikely champion of a new campaign warning of the dangers of loud music. New research released today by charity Action for Hearing Loss found that two-thirds of people had experienced ringing in their ears, with one-third of people exceeding safe volume levels on headphones.

Marking the launch of tinnitus awareness week, Oakenfold said: “I urge music lovers to wear ear defenders to gigs and avoid dangerously high volumes on personal music players.”

The British Tinnitus Association (BTA) is hosting an information day in Leeds on March 15 to provide help, advice and support to people affected.

It will include talks on the impact of the condition, treatments and the availability of local support.

Visitors will also be offered free taster sessions of relaxation techniques such as yoga, mindfulness and tai chi, as the experience of tinnitus is often heightened when an individual is stressed or anxious.

David Stockdale, chief executive of the British Tinnitus Association, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response to our other information days held around the country, and they have proved to be a fantastic way to disseminate information and to answer people’s tinnitus-related questions face to face.

“We are delighted to be bringing the event to Leeds in response to popular demand for something similar here.

“Although designed to be a series of drop-in sessions, people are welcome to come and spend the whole day with us to make the most of this unique opportunity.”

Representatives from hearing charities, sensory support services and community-based projects will also be present.
