Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Formerly categorized as an Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition characterized by recurrent or persistent thoughts, urges, or images (obsessions) that may consequently lead to uncontrollable repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Someone who is diagnosed with OCD may find themselves in a cycle of repeating certain behaviors to neutralize the obsessive thoughts. These obsessions and compulsions become a psychiatric concern when they begin to cause distress, anxiety, and/or an impairment to daily functions.
Although they vary in severity and frequency for every individual, themes that are common in OCD obsessions and compulsions include but are not limited to:
Obsessions
- Order and Symmetry
- Perfectionism
- Germs and Contamination
- Fear of Losing Self-control
Compulsions
- Rearranging Items
- Washing and Cleaning
- Checking
- Repeating
- Counting
- Collecting Items
